Hampton Roads Q&A

Question not listed? Call (866) 561-0518

Q: Why did Silver Diner close its final two locations in Hampton Roads?

A:  Silver Diner experimented with a smaller prototype restaurant when it entered the Tidewater market in 2000.  The company opened 3 locations, one in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and one in Newport News. Ultimately, the combination of the market, the economy and the size of the restaurants did not allow us to generate sales volumes sufficient to continue to operate in these locations.

Even though 2011 has been a year of record sales and EBITDA for the company and in our other 15 restaurants outside of the Hampton Roads market, we could not continue to cover routine monthly losses in these stores, particularly in the face of rising costs.

Q. Why did we give limited notice that we were closing the stores?

A. We were in an ongoing dialogue with our key landlord in Hampton Roads. We did not reach a definitive agreement until late December. Since our lease expired, we had to close one store almost immediately. With the other store’s lease expiring in a few months, and the ongoing monthly losses, it made sense to close them together.

Due to the nature of our restaurant business, preparing and serving food, we believed the most prudent course all around is to act swiftly and provide our team with severance and the opportunity to work at our other stores.

Q: Where is the nearest Silver Diner?

A: The closest one to Hampton Roads is in Innsbrook (Richmond) at 10890 W Broad St, Glen Allen, VA.

Q: What will happen to all the Silver Diner employees?

A:  We are going to do everything we can to help our Associates through this difficult time. We are providing severance to all employees who have been with us for at least a year and a positive referral letter to everyone. We are also offering our Associates who are willing to relocate opportunities at our other locations.

Q: My school has partnered with Silver Diner as part of the Eat Well, Do Well program. What will happen to that program?

A:  Silver Diner is very committed to the Eat Well, Do Well initiative. We are donating all funds raised in the Hampton Roads area during the 2011 fall semester. In January, we will be sending checks totaling almost $8,000 to 15 Hampton Roads schools.

Guests can continue to raise funds for the 15 Hampton Roads schools by making purchases at any our remaining locations through June 30, 2012.

Q: My school has a fundraiser scheduled at Silver Diner.

A: We’re sorry we won’t be able to host the fundraiser since all of our restaurants in Hampton Roads are now closed.  We will be in contact with those who scheduled those events but please call Joe Howell if you have questions; 301-770-0333 Ext 499.

Q: My Eat Well, Do Well card is linked to a school in Virginia Beach (or Newport News), even though I don’t live there. Will I still be able to raise funds for the school?

A: Yes. Guests who have linked their Eat Well, Do Well cards to the 15 Hampton Roads schools already in the program will continue to raise funds for these schools through June 30, 2012.

Q. I love the jukebox and booths in your restaurant, can I purchase it?

A: We’re sorry we are not selling any furniture, equipment or memorabilia from our Hampton Roads locations.
